Hokkaido is a vast island in northern Japan that has lots of roads with very light traffic. This makes self driving an extremely pleasant experience for travellers who are visiting the island. Even first time visitors to the island can self drive without major difficulties. However, do take note that to rent a car, you will need to be in possession of an International Driving Permit (IDP).
